CB Radio Basics
Master the fundamentals of CB radio communication. This guide covers everything beginners need to know, updated for 2025.
What is CB Radio?
Citizens Band (CB) radio is a short-distance radio communication system operating on 40 channels in the 27 MHz band (26.965 to 27.405 MHz). Unlike amateur (ham) radio, CB requires no license to operate in the United States – and it’s still 100% legal in 2025!
New in 2025: AM/FM Dual-Mode Technology
The FCC has approved dual-mode AM/FM CB technology in the U.S., which means:
- Clearer sound – FM mode reduces static and noise
- Improved voice detail – Better audio quality on FM
- Backward compatible – New radios still work with older AM-only units
- Same antennas – No need to replace your existing antenna
The 40 Channels
CB radio uses 40 designated channels. Here are the most important ones:
- Channel 9 – Emergency communications only
- Channel 19 – Primary highway/trucker channel (most active!)
- Channel 17 – North/South highway travel
- Channel 10 – Regional trucking
- Channels 1-7 – Local communication
- Channels 36-40 – SSB (Single Sideband) operations
Power Output Limits
The FCC limits CB radio power output to:
- AM Mode: 4 watts maximum
- FM Mode: 4 watts maximum (new in 2025)
- SSB Mode: 12 watts PEP (Peak Envelope Power)
Expected Range
With a properly tuned antenna:
- AM Mode: 1-5 miles typical, up to 10+ miles in ideal conditions
- FM Mode: Similar to AM, but with clearer audio
- SSB Mode: 10-20+ miles typical
